Can Acupuncture Help with Sciatica? What the Research Says

Sciatica pain doesn't have to be your normal. Discover how acupuncture, massage, and holistic care at Loon Holistic Health in Scandia, MN can provide lasting relief — backed by the latest research.

If you've ever felt that sharp, burning, or electric pain shoot from your lower back down through your leg, you know exactly what sciatica feels like. It can make sitting, standing, walking, and even sleeping unbearable. And for many people it becomes a frustrating cycle of pain that conventional treatments only partially address.

At Loon Holistic Health in Scandia, MN, we take a whole-person approach to sciatica — and acupuncture is one of the most powerful tools we have. Here's what the research says, and how our full range of services can help you finally get relief.

Conventional treatment often involves NSAIDs, muscle relaxants, physical therapy, or surgery in severe cases. But many people find these approaches fall short — either providing only temporary relief or coming with side effects they'd rather avoid. That's where holistic care comes in.

WHAT THE RESEARCH SAYS ABOUT ACUPUNCTURE AND SCIATICA

The evidence supporting acupuncture for sciatica has grown significantly in recent years, and it's now hard to ignore.

A landmark meta-analysis published in Frontiers in Neuroscience in 2023 reviewed 30 randomized controlled trials involving 2,662 participants. The findings were striking: acupuncture significantly outperformed medication for pain relief (as measured by Visual Analog Scale scores), improved physical function, and was associated with lower recurrence rates — meaning patients were less likely to have their symptoms return. Importantly, acupuncture also had a better safety profile than medication, with fewer adverse events reported.

Then in December 2024, a rigorous randomized clinical trial was published in JAMA Internal Medicine — one of the most respected medical journals in the world. In this multicenter study, 216 people with chronic sciatica from herniated discs received either 10 real acupuncture sessions or 10 sham acupuncture sessions over four weeks. The results? Those who received real acupuncture experienced significant leg pain reduction and functional improvement — and those benefits were still present at the 52-week follow-up, a full year later. No serious adverse events were reported.

A 2023 bioinformatics study also shed light on how acupuncture works at a cellular and neurological level, finding that acupuncture for sciatica works through multiple mechanisms simultaneously — including suppression of inflammatory stress, modulation of neurological function, and support of immune regulation. This helps explain why the effects tend to be lasting rather than just temporary pain masking.

In short: acupuncture doesn't just cover up sciatica pain. It works with your body's own healing systems to reduce inflammation, calm the nervous system, and restore function.

HOW ACUPUNCTURE TREATS SCIATICA

From a biomedical perspective, acupuncture stimulates the nervous system, promotes local blood flow, reduces inflammation, and triggers the release of endorphins — your body's natural pain-relieving compounds. It also down-regulates the pain signaling pathways involved in nerve compression.

From a traditional Chinese medicine perspective, sciatica often reflects obstruction along the Bladder and Gallbladder meridians, which run along the back of the leg and into the hip. Acupuncture clears that obstruction, reduces Qi stagnation, and restores the smooth flow of energy and circulation to the affected areas.

At Loon Holistic Health, our licensed acupuncturists tailors every treatment to the individual. Your sciatica isn't exactly like anyone else's, and your treatment shouldn't be either. A full intake — including the nature of your pain, your overall health picture, and contributing lifestyle factors — guides the selection of acupuncture points to give you the most targeted and effective care possible.

HOW OUR OTHER SERVICES SUPPORT SCIATICA RELIEF

MASSAGE THERAPY

The piriformis muscle — located deep in the buttock — can compress the sciatic nerve when it becomes tight or inflamed. Therapeutic massage helps release tension in the piriformis, gluteal muscles, and the surrounding soft tissue, reducing the mechanical pressure on the nerve. Our massage therapists work in close collaboration with acupuncture care to address both the muscular and neurological components of sciatica. Regular massage also improves circulation and reduces the buildup of inflammatory compounds in the tissues around the nerve.

REIKI

Living with chronic pain takes a toll on your nervous system, your sleep, and your emotional wellbeing. Reiki is an energy-based healing practice that supports the body's natural ability to rest, repair, and rebalance. For sciatica patients, Reiki can be a powerful complement to hands-on care — helping to reduce the stress response, improve sleep quality, and create the internal conditions your body needs to heal.

WHY YOU SHOULD CHOOSE A LICENSED ACUPUNCTURIST — NOT A CHIROPRACTOR OR PT WITH A NEEDLING CERTIFICATION

This is important, and we feel strongly about it.

In recent years, both physical therapists and chiropractors have begun offering dry needling or "chiropractic acupuncture" — often after completing a weekend course or brief certification program. They may describe these services as being "similar to acupuncture," but the difference in training is enormous.

A licensed acupuncturist in Minnesota completes a minimum of three to four years of graduate-level education in acupuncture and Chinese medicine — typically 3,000 or more clinical hours — and must pass rigorous national board examinations to become credentialed. That education includes a deep understanding of anatomy, needling safety, Traditional Chinese Medicine theory, and how the entire body functions as an interconnected system.

A chiropractor or physical therapist offering dry needling has typically completed a weekend to a few days of training — sometimes as little as 100 hours. The scope of their needle use is narrow, their depth of knowledge in Chinese medicine is limited, and the safety considerations are often not the same. They also have not had years of internships in hospitals or rehab centers like license acupuncturists have.

For a condition like sciatica, which involves nerve tissue, the stakes are high. Improper needling near the sciatic nerve, the lumbar spine, or surrounding structures is not without risk. You want someone who has spent years learning this craft.

Beyond safety, there's also the question of effectiveness. A licensed acupuncturist isn't just placing needles into trigger points — they are assessing your entire health picture, selecting points based on a coherent diagnostic framework, and adjusting treatment based on your response over time. That's a fundamentally different and more comprehensive approach.
